Councillor Martin Fodor
Chair of Bristol City Council’s Environment and Sustainability Committee
First elected in 2014 Martin is currently the longest-serving Green of 34 on Bristol City Council.
He promoted practical local sustainability and partnership working with responsibility for partnerships in the city when setting up the Sustainable City Team in the 90s. He developed a sustainable construction guide and worked at local, national and European level on policies for sustainable cities. He has consistently linked cross cutting issues, ensuring strategies connect social, economic and environmental issues.
As the Local Government Association’s first climate change and sustainability adviser in the late 90s he ensured government recognition of the contributions of local authorities.
When senior climate policy adviser at the Environment Agency for England and Wales, he developed policies on renewable energy and adaptation consistent with sustainable drainage and nature based solutions.
He’s worked with partners on business initiatives including the WWF NatWest Green Business pack in the 90s and the 2015 Bristol European Green Capital Go Green initiative.
From 2014 Martin led Green scrutiny of Bristol’s Community services and contributed to council policy development on sustainable procurement.
Since 2024 he has been chair of the city’s new cross party Environment and Sustainability Committee, leading on climate, ecology, waste and energy policies. He’s also the deputy chair of the LGAs City Regions Board for the independent and green group.
