One City Boards meet quarterly and are responsible for driving forward the goals of the One City Plan, which aim to make Bristol a fair, healthy, and sustainable city. They provide thematic leadership, advice and guidance on board work programmes and identify opportunities for collaboration across the city.  

Below is a summary of quarter two Bristol One City board meetings along with some of their offers and asks of the city.  

 

The Homes and Communities Board met at City Hall where members had an exploratory conversation about working with the new UK government. The board also heard presentations on Bristol Temple Quarter development and the council’s emerging Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy for 2024-2029.

The Transport Board met at the University of West of England Bristol in July. They explored how the transport sector can collaborate to meet Bristol’s climate challenge. Board members also received presentations from Visit West who highlighted the importance of transport for visitors’ experiences of Bristol and from National Highways on their upcoming projects for the Eastville Viaduct of the M32.

The Children and Young People’s Board met at City Hall in July to discuss priorities for the forthcoming year with the new One City board’s co-chair and Chair of the Children and Young People Committee, Councillor Christine Townsend. The board also received a presentation from Youth Councillor Ellen Sheehy on the Bristol City Youth Council and their draft Manifesto.

The Culture Board was hosted by St Georges Bristol and chaired by Charlotte Geeves, Bristol Old Vic, and Councillor Tony Dyer, Leader of the Council and Chair of the Strategy and Resources Committee. The board members were invited to contribute to the development of the upcoming Bristol City Council Culture Strategy. Board members were also updated on the progress being made to deliver a Bristol City Council’s Economic and Social Value Impact Questionnaire for the culture sector and how the data collected from this questionnaire will feed into the development the culture strategy.

The Health and Wellbeing Board is a statutory board which aims to improve health and wellbeing by providing a forum in which key health and care leaders can work together. At the July Board meeting, the board discussed the vision for adult care, local health inequalities and the council’s Food Equality Action Plan.

At the Economy and Skills Board meeting, members received an update on the Bristol City Council Committee System and reviewed their approach to refreshing board membership.  

Board members also received an update on the work to progress One City Goal 58 which aims to address gender, race, ethnicity and disability pay and progression gaps in the city, as well as improve skills pathways and mentoring routes into senior employment opportunities. A working group has been set up to collaborate on the goal and includes members from both the Economy & Skills Board and Culture Board, as well as partners from organisations across the city. The group are developing a proposal to support city partners to report on pay gaps within their organisations using the HR data product created by Bristol Race Equality Strategic Leaders’ Group

The Environment Board received a briefing on the Bristol Good Food 2030 framework, Bristol’s Just Transition and reviewed their upcoming goals and opportunities to collaborate with other boards to deliver the One City Vision.
